A People Betrayed – The Role of the West in Rwanda’s Genocide

A People Betrayed – The Role of the West in Rwanda’s Genocide
Book Weight : 0.55kg
Book Size : 6" X 9"
Total Pages : 272
ISBN Number : 1-85649-831-X
Author : L R Melvern
Publisher : ZED Books & NAEP
Year : 2005
Price : RM65.00 (excluding postage cost)

Book Description:

In Rwanda in 1994 one million people were killed in a planned, public and political campaign. For six years Linda Melvern has worked on the story of this horrendous crime, and this book, a classic piece of investigative journalism, is the result. Its new and startling information has the making of an international scandal.

The book contains a full narrative account of how the genocide unfolded and describes its scale, speed and intensity. And the book provides a terrible indictment, not just of the UN Security Council, but even more so of governments and individuals who could have prevented what was happening but chose not to do so.

Drawing on a series of in-depth interviews, the author also tells the story of the unrecognized heroism of those who stayed on during the genocide - volunteer UN peacekeepers, their Force Commander the Canadian Lt.-General Romeo A. Dallaire, and Philippe Gaillard, the head of a delegation of the International Committee of the Red Cross, helped by medical teams from Medecins Sans Frontieres.
The international community, which fifty years ago resolved that genocide never happened again, not only failed to prevent it happening in Rwanda, but, as this book shows, international funds intended to help the Rwandan economy actually helped to create the conditions that made the genocide possible. Documents held in Kigali, the Rwandan capital, as well as hitherto unpublished evidence of secret UN Security Council deliberations in New York, reveal a shocking sequence of events.

What happened in Rwanda shows that despite the creation of an organisation set up to prevent a repetition of genocide - for the UN is central to this task - it failed to do so, even when the evidence was indisputable. At a time when increasing attention is being given to the need for UN reform, this book provides evidence to urgently accelerate and focus that process. Only by understanding how and why the genocide happened can there be any hope that this new century will break with the dismal record of the last.

Selected Works on Southeast Asia

Selected Works on Southeast Asia
Book Weight : 1.22kg
Book Size : 6" X 9"
Total Pages : 748
ISBN Number : 981-230-270-0
Author : Michael Leifer
Publisher : ISEAS
Year : 2005
Price : RM216 (excluding the postage cost)

Book Description:

It is … most approptiate that his most enduring works on the region have been collected in this volume and edited by two scholars who have followed his work closely over the decades. From the collection, we can see how deeply Michael (Leifer) had immersed himself in the region’s fate and how much he served as the questioning and voice that tracked and captured the region’s history since the early 190s.

Wang Gungwu
East Asian Institute, Singapora

All of us who are involved in security in Southeast Asia are deeply indebted to Michael Leifer for his intellectual contribution to the field. With his reasoned analysis, he added a balance to our own reflections. On a personal level, he was “present at the creation” of ISIS Thailand in October 1981, then the Southeast Asian Security Studies Program. From that time onwards, we benefited from his academic insight and constant moral support.

Media History – Worldviews and Communication Futures

Media History
Book Weight : 0.55
Book Size : 6" X 9"
Total Pages : 329
Author : Ahmad Murad Merican
ISBN Number : 983-100-235-0
Publisher : MALAYA
Year : 2005
Price : RM35.00 (excluding the postage cost)

Book Description:
How have competing paradigms and worldviews inform and connect us as to the interlocking domain of communication, civilizations and knowledge production? How has communication come to be studied, and what possible trajectories for theorizing it? What has mainstream historiography inform us on the invention of the moveble printing press and its communication and intellectual ramifications? What should have been argued in the media imperialism debate? Is communication a victim of epistemological convergence?

This book then seeks to introduce alternative perspectives with regard to examining communication as to its historical, political and epistemological constituents; and as well as (re)locating it within an Islamic perspective and other sacred traditions. The author in acknowledging the importance of addressing the intellectual ferment in communication as a field of study, suggests a redefinition of the subject and reconstituting it in the light of current debates. Significant to the project is emphasizing and embracing dimensions otherwise overlooked by mainstream historiography. In so doing, the author reclaims some of the neglected aspects of the history of the field, by refuting what has been accepted as “received knowledge,” particularly within the context of the formation and development of Western science and thought. Arguments are advanced linking the transcendence of the idea to the extension of man’s mind and culture through what is termed as technologies of literacy and the sacred. Subsequently, the author foresees the collapse of communication as an academic field, thus transforming and reconfiguring it as a synthesis beyond disciplinary boundaries.

Media History will be invaluable for those interested in communication and media studies; and especially for graduated students, and scholars of the human and social sciences and technology studies, history and civilization, and the sociology of knowledge.
